The rise of Instagram

Just 2 years before Facebook's takeover of the photo sharing app, which took place earlier this year, Instagram had been struggling to gain the sufficient number of users that would enable them to justify a $500,000 investment in their project.

Prior to its launch as an app in October 2010 the layout and functions of the Instagram website were very basic and far from the slick interface that greets users today. However as it was transformed into a mobile app it received an impressive makeover and the popularity began to soar, below is a timeline charting Instagram's rise to a $1 billion company.
