Like the epic Hollywood-produced battles between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, or assorted 'Halflings' vs. an army of orcs, etc... can always find new material for a sequel, prequel or TV spin off, the economic slugging-match between Samsung and Apple has just moved into a new arena.
The opening Gambit was played a few weeks ago, when Apple carefully leaked the news that they were working on what has since been dubbed the 'iWatch'. As yet, there has yet been no confirmation directly from the company - but the specificity of the reports make an official company statement close to redundant.
Samsung has now responded by announcing that they are in the development stages of producing a smart wristwatch. In an interview with Bloomberg, published today, the executive vice president of Samsung's mobile business, Lee Young Hee, stated: "We've been preparing the watch product for so long. We are working hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them."
No further specifics on the final product or an indication of its launch was given by Mr Hee.
It serves, just as that 20 second first teaser-trailer to an upcoming blockbuster does, to give you the smallest of glimpses at things to come. The fight for smart-device supremacy has thus moved its next round. Any product launch could be expected at the back end of this year, at the very earliest - so maybe it is more of a question whether we will still care to delve into our pockets for our hard earned cash or whether "Samsung vs. Apple: 2" turns out to be a box office train-wreck.
