A Post That Doesn't Mention the C-Word

Right, it's nearing the end of December and everyone's really excited about a particular holiday. I'm not. It's not just that I'm a curmudgeon (which I am), but it's really a lot of effort, particularly when there are no small children in my family who actually get excited about it. Anyway, this post is not going to be related to that Christian festival.

Kwanzaa is a little-known holiday on British shores and is celebrated between December 26th and January 1st. It celebrates the West African diaspora and is the first solely African American holiday. It was created by Maulana Karenga, a major player in the black power movement, in 1966, with the ultimate goal to "give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and give Blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society."

How does this tie into SEO and digital you ask? It doesn't really, but if you type "Santa Claus" into Google, you'll get this wintery-themed heading. Cool eh? Tis' the season after all.

But, perhaps less predictably, if you search for kwanzaa, you get this.

It's just nice to see that the team at Google are a thoughtfully multicultural bunch willing to put the effort in to raise awareness of this obscure holiday.

See, it all came together in the end. Sorta
